What is Frozen Blossom?

It is not - and never will be - possible to talk about the year 2020 without mentioning the extraordinary pandemic that the world is currently going through. Earlier in the year, we were confined to residence and, in order to slow the spread of the virus, instructed not to go outside for an indefinite length of time. It was a shock for everyone because no one alive had ever experienced such a situation previously and did not know how to deal with it. The world around us suddenly ground to a halt as if someone had pressed the pause button on the remote control that rules our every movement. We were in lockdown waiting for time to pass like hibernating animals looking forward to the arrival of fine weather. We did this to protect ourselves and to deal with this interruption in time... We were like living beings caught in ice.

Frozen Blossom is an art work composed of images of small tree and shrub flowers trapped in blocks of ice and photographed outdoors with the sun as the only available light source. These frozen corollas form colourful sculptures, and might be viewed as protecting the blooms from the effects of time and the outside world. The pictures are also influenced by the unusual atmospheric conditions of spring this year: a sky without the slightest trace of air traffic, an immaculate blue that adds to the intensity of the unreal and frozen effect...

Through this work, I wanted to weave parallels between what we experienced and the subjects in the photographs. For, while we were forced into immobility, Nature continued to develop and explode with colour.

Although the disease appeared and was transmitted from person to person as a natural process, it would never have had such an impressive impact without the collaboration of Man, who spread it rapidly without ever intending to do so. This pandemic is in a way the result of a synergy between humans and their environment. It is this situation that I have symbolised, and thereby show natural elements that have undergone human intervention before finally immortalising them again in a natural setting.

Qu'est-ce que Frozen Blossom ?

Il est et ne sera jamais possible de parler de l'année 2020 sans évoquer la pandémie extraordinaire qu'elle aura connue. Nous avons été confinés et il nous était déconseillé de sortir pendant une durée indéterminée pour ralentir la propagation du virus. Ce fut un choc pour tout le monde parce que personne n'avait vécu une telle situation et ne savait comment réagir. Le monde autour de nous s'est arrêté subitement comme si quelqu'un avait appuyé sur le bouton pause de la télécommande qui gouverne notre société. Nous étions enfermés à attendre que le temps passe comme un animal qui hiberne et attend le retour des beaux jours. Nous avons agi comme cela pour nous préserver et répondre à cet arrêt dans le temps... tels des êtres vivants pris dans de la glace.

Frozen Blossom est un travail composé d'images de fleurs d'arbustes emprisonnées dans un bloc de glace et photographiées à l'extérieur avec comme seule source de lumière, celle du soleil. Ces corolles congelées forment des sculptures colorées qui pourraient être conçues pour les mettre à l'abri des effets du temps et les protéger du monde extérieur. Les prises de vue sont aussi tributaires des conditions atmosphériques inhabituelles de ce printemps : un ciel sans la moindre trace de trafic aérien, d’un bleu immaculé qui contribue à intensifier l’effet irréel et figé…

Par ce travail, j'ai voulu tisser des parallèles entre ce que nous avons vécu et les sujets photographiés. Tandis que nous étions astreints à l’immobilité, la nature, de son côté, se développait en explosions de couleurs.

Bien que la maladie est apparue et s'est transmise de personne en personne naturellement, elle n'aurait jamais eu un impact aussi impressionnant sans la collaboration de l'Homme qui l’a propagée rapidement malgré lui. Cette pandémie est en quelque sorte le fruit d'une synergie entre les humains et leur environnement. C'est cette situation que je représente, en montrant des éléments naturels qui ont subi une intervention humaine tout en les immortalisant finalement à nouveau dans leur cadre naturel.
